Another year has passed, and I have another collection of one-sentence movie reviews for films I saw in 2025. This is the fourth consecutive year I’ve done this, here are the previous lists: 2024, 2023, and 2022 Movies with One-Sentence Reviews. My favorite new movie of the year was easily F1 starring Brad Pitt.
The Smashing Machine (2025) – A surprisingly authentic and somewhat uncharitable MMA biopic which is The Rock’s best movie 8.5/10
Tron: Ares (2025) – A gorgeous, dumb movie which also sounds phenomenal while carrying a substantial bucket of Hollywood slop ideology 7.5/10
Outland (1981) – Sean Connery running around a space station with a shotgun for 2 hours doesn’t make a lot of but looks cool and has retro charm 7.5/10
Triumph of the Will (1935) – A fascinating window into 1930’s Germany if you have the patience for a documentary without a story 8.5/10
To Catch a Thief (1955) – A Hitchcock mystery set in the French Riviera which moves slow by modern standards but everything looks beautiful including Grace Kelly 7.5/10
The Last Boy Scout (1991) – Probably just watch Die Hard again 6.5/10
Police Story 3: Supercop (1992) – Seemingly the Terminator 2 of 1990’s Hong Kong kung-fu with shockingly ambitious, large-scale action sequences 8/10
As I Am: The Life and Times of DJ AM (2015) – One of my greatest inspirations as a DJ but otherwise a forgettable posthumous documentary I wouldn’t recommend to anyone who isn’t already a fan 7/10
Sneakers (1992) – Belongs among the greatest hacker movies of all time and now my favorite Robert Redford movie 8.5/10
Rear Window (1954) – Another Alfred Hitchcock movie starring Grace Kelly; a slow-burning and beautiful mystery meditation on the subject of voyeurism 7.5/10
Manhunter (1986) – The phenomenal predecessor to Silence of the Lambs which I had never heard of, directed by the masterful Michael Mann 9/10
Ski School (1991) – Completely brainless early-90’s neon movie about partying on the slopes 5.5/10
No Man’s Land (1987) – Charlie Sheen is an impossibly cool Los Angeles car thief who specializes in Porsches 7/10
F1 (2025) – The best movie I’ve seen in theaters since Top Gun: Maverick, and fittingly, made by the same people 9.5/10
The Wild One (1953) – The pioneer which inserted motorcycle gang culture into the mainstream is still incredible 9/10
Open Water (2004) – A low-budget indie film with an outstanding premise, well executed 8/10
Cashback (2006) – Bizarre indie film about a British supermarket employee that lives in comfortable delusion 7/10
John Wick: Ballerina (2025) – I like Ana de Armas but this pales in comparison to the John Wick quadrilogy 6.5/10
Ash (2025) – The directorial debut of Flying Lotus is better than expected and stars Aaron Paul 8/10
Disclosure (1994) – This 90’s drama about sexual harassment culture was way ahead of its time 8.5/10
The Hunt for Red October (1990) – I had high expectations and this exceeded them by excelling in every dimension 9.5/10
The Order (2024) – Brave for the filmmakers to tackle this subject matter, but no surprise that it doesn’t reach its potential 7.5/10
Bill & Ted: Face the Music (2020) – Not nearly as bad as it could have been, but it’s hard to make an argument for why you shouldn’t just watch the original again instead 7/10
A Working Man (2025) – Jason Statham movies aren’t particularly smart or sophisticated, but they are a lot of fun 8/10
Pickpocket (1959) – Slow and dramatic, but the life of a Parisian thief is an interesting window into 1950’s European street crime 8/10
Novocaine (2025) – Protagonist feels no pain and uses this ability to risk everything to simp for his latina co-worker 5/10
Palo Alto (2014) – A beautiful but somewhat boring adaptation of a James Franco short story, directed by the granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola 7.5/10
The She-Creature (1956) – Charmingly retro costume and special effects don’t get in the way of a compelling story about a deceptive woman 7/10
Network (1976) – A captivating and prescient look at the effects of mass media, which was clearly ahead of its time 9.5/10
The Quick and the Dead (1995) – Gene Hackman and Leonardo DiCaprio are fantastic despite having so much competition in the cowboy drama genre 8/10
Coming 2 America (2021) – Doesn’t come close to the original but it wasn’t so bad I regretted watching 6.5/10
Utopia (2024) – B-movie adaptation of the Westworld show concept that feels very corny 6/10
Let’s Start a Cult (2024) – I like Stavros Halkias but his film debut in this feels terrible and fails in both comedic and dramatic dimensions 5.5/10
Flight Risk (2025) – Mark Wahlberg hijacking an airplane isn’t as cool as Keanu Reeves saving a bus, but this is still dumb fun even if it’s an unworthy homage to Speed 7/10
Trap (2024) – I thought Josh Hartnett had disappeared, but apparently he’s back as a psychopathic father in an M. Night Shyamalan thriller 7/10
